The UMN Meat Science team recently traveled to San Angelo, TX for the 2016 Reciprocal Meat Conference. The U had 6 individuals in attendance including Dr. Ryan Cox, graduate students Megan Nelson and Christina Fehrman, and 3 undergraduate students: Jordan Juckel, Nicole O’Sell, and Kirsten Hall. The 5 students competed in an intercollegiate processed meat judging contest. Both the undergraduate and graduate team placed 4th overall. Individually, Christina and Megan placed 3rd and 13th in the graduate division, and Jordan, Nicole, and Kirsten placed 7th, 14th, and 9th respectively in the undergraduate division. Other activities the students participated in included a quiz bowl competition and an iron chef competition. During the travel time, they were able to tour the Tyson Discovery Center and Mexican Original plant in Springdale, Arkansas as well as the Oklahoma City stockyards. The quiz bowl team will be looking for new members next year so if you would be interested in competing and traveling to College Station, Texas, contact any member of the Meat Science team.
