Dr. Jerry Shurson to Speak at International Conference

Dr. Shurson will speak at two conferences in March in Southeast Asia – VIV Asia 2017. These conferences are the International Trade Show from Feed to Food for Asia in Bangkok and Asia Grain Transportation Conference in Saigon. The title of his presentation is “A-maiz-ing DDGS” and will focus on research done here at the U of M. It will particularly focus on research collaborators within our department and the many discoveries that led to the development of precision animal nutrition when feeding corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) to swine, poultry, and aquaculture.

The amount of DDGS produced by the U.S. ethanol industry has increased to the amount of soybean meal produced, and it is currently being exported to over 30 countries around the world for use as an economical energy and protein source in animal feeds. However, recent anti-dumping and counterveiling duties on U.S. DDGS imports imposed by China (formerly the largest DDGS export market) and the withdrawal of the U.S. from the Trans Pacific Partnership have created new challenges for maintaining export demand for this co-product of ethanol production. Dr. Shurson’s role in these conferences is to provide education as part of the U.S. Grains Council's efforts to increase demand for DDGS throughout all of Asia to meet their growing demand for imported feed ingredients and provide food security for the ever increasing population of consumers of meat, milk, and eggs.

We wish Dr. Jerry Shurson the best of luck in his travels, and know that we will represent our department very well!
