4-H: 100 YEARS IN 2002
Peanuts' "Lucy" Promotes 4-H Centennial
Minnesota 4-H has a new spokesperson for its Centennial - it's Lucy Van Pelt, the lovable Peanuts character! Minnesota 4-H is very excited that a 5-foot tall "4-H Centennial Lucy" will be part of the "Looking for Lucy" initiative that will last throughout this summer. Lucy is sponsored by Minnesota 4-H and will be located on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and will be visited by many thousands of people throughout this summer.
The 4-H Centennial Lucy is one of 103 statues that will be on display throughout the streets of St. Paul in honor of the late Charles Schulz, St. Paul native and creator of the world-famous Peanuts comic strip. The statues are sponsored and displayed by local businesses and all proceeds from the initiative will go towards a future bronze sculpture of the entire Peanuts characters in St. Paul's Landmark Plaza and to help fund the Schulz Scholarship Program at St. Paul's College of Visual Arts and the Art Instruction School.
Lucy is the third Peanuts character to grace the streets of St. Paul (Snoopy 2000, Charlie Brown 2001). Each year's summer art celebration brought visitors from virtually all fifty states and from forty countries around the world. An estimated 700,000 people from all corners of the globe visited St. Paul last year to see the Charlie Brown statues. Therefore, we're very excited and certain that Lucy will be an extremely visible and positive spokesperson for 4-H's Centennial!
