- Delaware -

April 3, 2004 - Delaware, Maryland drop limits on poultry: Quarantine, ban on manure lifted (Newszap.com)

February 6, 2004 - Low Path Avian Influenza (LPAI) Found in Delaware: A flock of 12,000 chickens were destroyed after they were found to have LPAI. State authorities have tested chickens at 12 farms within two miles of the farm, but have not yet found any additional positive flocks. The strain of avian influenza is NOT the same as the strain currently affect birds and humans in Asia. The Delaware strain is an H7 which is not transmissible to humans. The strain in Asia is an H5. Countries banning U.S. poultry: Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Poland, and Saudi Arabia. Countries banning poultry from Delaware: Russia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.


- Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia) -

November 2004 - Avian Flu Found in Ducks on Delmarva - The Maryland Department of Agriculture reported mid-November 2004 that two ducks on a farm in southern Worcester County tested positive for a form of the avian flu. But officials say the strain cannot spread to chickens and is not a threat to the poultry industry. Random tests identified the sick ducks, but further testing has found no other ducks with the disease.


- Maryland -

March 5, 2004: A four-house poultry farm in Maryland was diagnosed as avian influenza (AI) positive. The strain was similar to the strain involved in the delaware/New Jersey outbreak. This finding was confirmed Saturday afternoon, March 6. The strain is similar to the strain involved in the Delaware / New Jersey outbreak.


- New Jersey -

February 12, 2004 - Low Pathogenic Avian influenza has been detected at four live bird markets in northern New Jersey. This is NOT the same strain that is occurring in Asia - it is not dangerous to humans. See press release.


- Pennsylvania -

February 23, 2004 - Russia not to ban Pennsylvania poultry (PoultexNew.com)

February 2004 - Low Path Avian Influenza (LPAI) was discovered in a layer flock in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The virus, an H2N2 strain, was discovered during routine surveillance testing for AI and had no clinical signs to indicate illness.


- Texas -

June 22, 2004 - LPAI outbreak in Texas: It was confirmed that a flock of 14 birds in NE Texas was infected with H7N3 strain of Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Avian influenza detected in small flock in Hopkins County (Texas Animal Health News Release)

February 2004 - High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was found in Gonzales, Texas. This the first incidence of HPAI in the U.S. in over 20 years.

Bird Flu Summit in Rome (February 3-4, 2004) - A group of experts met in Rome to discuss how best to control the bird flu situation. Attending the 2-day summit were experts from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The outcome of the meeting was presented at the press conference. See conclusions and recommendations from the summit.

May, 2005 - Swine flu caught by turkeys in British Columbia, Canada. The H3 strain of the flu virus was recently detected in a small number of turkeys during routine blood sampling at a turkey farm in Abbotsford, BC (Canada) but is not serious enough to be reportable to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The H3 virus is more common among pigs in the Prairie provinces, where it seems to have emerged in swine imported to Manitoba from the United States.

March 2003 - High Path Avian Influenza (HPAI) was diagnosed on several farms in the Netherlands. It has since spread to Belgium and Germany. If traveling to Europe, especially infected areas, follow biosecurity measures when returning to poultry farms in the U.S. or if you have pet birds at home.
