ANSC 1021: Avian Sampler (Spring term) - 1 cr
Introductory class designed to teach students different aspects of avian biology. The course will incorporate planned environmental and conservation practices along with wildlife rehabilitation programs that are important for maintaining healthy populations of wild birds in Minnesota. The care, management and health considerations of many types of avian species such as domestic poultry, raptors, ratites, and companion birds will be emphasized.

ANSC 2014: Poultry Judging (Spring term) - 2 cr
Students will learn how to distinguish the subtle differences among poultry and poultry products and compete for a position on the team representing the University at that Collegiate Poultry Judging in Louisiana in April.

AnSc 3144 - Advanced poultry judging - 1 cr
(Prereq = AnSc 2014)
Student will continue to learn how to judge live poultry and poultry products. Students compete for a position on four-person team representing the University of Minnesota at the National Collegiate Poultry Judging content in Fayetteville, Arkansas in November.

ANSC 4605: Poultry Production Systems Management (Fall term, biyearly) - 4 cr
Physiology, genetics, diseases, nutrition of poultry and relation to current management practices for production of eggs, broilers, and turkeys. Technical and practical phases of production and marketing in relation to their underlying principles. Visits to commercial production units.


Midwest Poultry Consortium Courses

The Midwest Poultry Consortium, of which the University of Minnesota is a member (so credits are applied to your UMN degree), offers poultry courses in the summer. The classes are held at the University of Wisconsin, Madison campus and your tuition (9 credits/ summer x 2 summers) is paid for by the consortium. They also cover your room during the 6-week instructional period. For more information, contact Dr. Sally Noll.

SUMMER SESSION I:

Animal Sciences 503 - Avian Physiology (3 cr)
This course discusses general physiology of all organ systems of economic importance, using embryological, endocrinological and cellular biological concepts. Emphasis is on physiological functions associated with productivity.

Animal Sciences 511 - Breeder Flock and Hatchery Management (3 cr)
This course concentrates on the production of high quality day-old chicks and poults and the management factors involved with breeder flocks, incubation, and embryology. Aspects of operating a hatchery are also included. Field trips are planned.

Animal Sciences 508 - Poultry Products Technology (3 cr)
This course includes information on procurement, processing and distribution of poultry meat, eggs and further processed products. Composition, quality measurements, preservation, and economics are related to the biochemistry, microbiology and technology involved in current processing methods.
  

SUMMER SESSION II:

Animal Sciences 512 - Avian Health (3 cr)
The objective of this course is to train students to identify diseases that commonly plague poultry. Instruction on animal well being, transport regulations, disease surveillance, and methods of disinfection and sanitation is included.

Animal Sciences 314 - Poultry Nutrition (3 cr)
This course objective is to develop a conceptual understanding of nutrient requirements for optimal growth and production of commercial poultry species. The use of computer programming for feed formulation is emphasized. Field trips are planned.

Animal Sciences 315 - Poultry Enterprise Management (3 cr)
This course provides fundamental business and economic principles and practices for successful poultry production with emphasis on problem solving in flock management. Software application core programs will be the Microsoft Office for Windows suite.
