Notes from the Department Head
gold and maroon bar

Dr. Michael E. White, Professor and Head of the Department of Animal Science

I wish to thank Jim Linn for his many years of service to the Department of Animal Science and to the University of Minnesota. Jim has been a faculty member in the Department for over the past 32 years and has served as an Extension Dairy Specialist in Nutrition with active programs in Dairy Extension, Research and Teaching. In addition, Jim has served as Department Head for the past 4 years and provided excellent and steady leadership during his tenure. As Jim graduates to Professor and Head Emeritus, he leaves us with an outstanding Department, strongly dedicated to our mission with exceptional faculty that excel in teaching, research and extension, a dedicated and talented staff, a strong graduate program, and a steadily expanding enrollment of quality undergraduate students in our major. Jim, all of us in the Department wish to thank you for all of your contributions and dedication. We wish you all good things as you graduate to pursue your next great adventure.

Just as Jim is taking on new challenges as he explores new horizons, so I am being called to new challenges. For those who may not know me, my name is Mike White and I have recently become the new Department Head of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota. I have long and strong ties to the Department, the College and the University. I grew up in and around the University. My father was a Professor and is now a Professor Emeritus from the Department of Horticulture in CFANS. My wife, two children and I have obtained or are obtaining degrees from this great University. For us, the University of Minnesota is definitely a “family affair”.

I obtained my Ph.D. in Muscle Biology/Animal Growth and Development from the Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota, and I have been a Professor of Animal Science for nearly 26 years spending the first six of those years at The Ohio State University and the most recent 20 years here at the University of Minnesota. I have been active in teaching and research and am a Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor. My teaching has included courses on the physiology of animal growth and development, on environment, food systems and citizenship, and a Learning Abroad course taught in Italy studying sustainable food systems concepts. I am involved as a mentor for new teaching faculty in the Early Career Faculty Development Program of the University Center for Teaching and Learning and am a member of the ADT (Academy of Distinguished Teachers). My research is a collaboration with the muscle biology group investigating the cellular and molecular regulation of muscle growth and development, focusing on the role of anabolic steroids, the insulin-like growth factors and myostatin in these processes.

I have a deep appreciation of our traditions and believe we have an important and powerful role to play in the future of the College, University, and society. I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead and to partnering with our many stakeholders to meet opportunities and challenges alike with enthusiasm and creativity.

Hugh Chester-Jones

Dr. Hugh Chester-JonesDr. Hugh Chester-Jones hails from the United Kingdom. His passion for agriculture was gained from numerous visits to family farms in North Wales and later with practical experiences on UK, Canadian and U.S. dairy farms.  After college in the UK, Hugh gained a further five years experience in the practical and commercial agricultural industry before moving to the United States in 1975. He completed his education in the U.S. at the University of Massachusetts and at Virginia Tech. During his graduate program, Hugh was on staff as an agricultural supervisor in the animal science department where he had responsibilities for managing an animal nutrition research farm. This set the stage for Hugh in 1985 to join the faculty of the Southern Research and Outreach Center (SROC) as the first animal scientist at Outreach Centers to have a tenure track in the Department of Animal Science.

Hugh’s research interests have included dairy and beef production systems focusing on management, nutrition, health and growth of dairy calves from birth, raised for heifer replacements or dairy-beef.  Hugh currently is the supervisor of the SROC commercial calf and heifer raising research and extension facility, a unique partnership with three commercial dairies, University of Minnesota and allied industry colleagues.  Research this past 8 years has focused on nutrition and management strategies for raising dairy heifers from 2 to 4 days to 6 months of age in collaboration with colleagues in industry, animal science and veterinary medicine.

Hugh is the Minnesota Representative for the North Central Regional Dairy Management Project NC-1042 involving 22 states, which has a strong core group in dairy heifer replacements research and outreach. Hugh also contributes to the U of M dairy and beef extension teams. Much of his national efforts over the past 13 years have been helping with educational programs for the National Dairy Calf and Heifer Association. Hugh does not have a teaching appointment but enjoys opportunities to interact with both undergraduate and graduate students in the classroom or field trips to SROC.

Hugh is active in professional societies and is a member of the FASS Scientific Policy Committee. Hugh is currently involved locally in the Waseca Exchange Club, Chamber of Commerce Ag Business Committee and Waseca FFA Alumni Chapter. Hugh and his wife Ann have two daughters, Angharad (31) and Rhonwen (27; married). Hugh enjoys biking, the local fitness center, and watching all sports.

Anderson is Top Junior Exhibitor at World Dairy Expo
Source: Hoard's Dairyman

Karen AndersonAnimal Science undergraduate Karen Anderson won the 2011 Merle Howard Award for being top junior exhibitor at the World Dairy Expo. She is the 8th winner of this award that recognizes youth who demonstrate outstanding skills in fitting and showmanship, and have a passion for the dairy industry. Karen is the daughter of David and Donna Anderson of Lester Prairie, MN.

Karen is an outstanding judge, exhibitor and leader, and she has an incredible judging record with three high individual honors at national dairy judging contests. In 2006, she placed first overall individual at the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, PA. Three years later, she repeated that same accomplishment by winning high individual at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest at World Dairy Expo. And last fall, Karen was high individual at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY, where she also won oral reasons. In addition, Karen served as president of her breed’s national junior association two years ago.

At World Dairy Expo, Karen showed seven cows and heifers that placed in the top four in her junior breed show during the last four years. Of that group, all but one was homebred individuals. In 2009, she exhibited the Reserve All American Junior 3-year-old and captured Junior All American honors when named Reserve Grand Champion of the National Guernsey Junior Show at World Dairy Expo.

This week, her homebred fall yearling, Up The Creek Super Lux Kazoom-ET, was named Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show. Karen fits and prepares her own animals for the show each year. For these and many other accomplishments, Karen was named the Outstanding National Guernsey Youth last year.

The award is given in memory of Merle Howard who was the 1954 Klussendorf winner and a long-time World Dairy Expo volunteer. He worked at Moosehart Farms as a herd manager, served as a Holstein classifier, and later was involved in the sales and export business. He was on the first board of directors of National Dairy Shrine and is only one of six people to have won its 4-E Award for outstanding service.

Siehl Prize for Excellence in Agriculture Seeks Nominations

The Siehl Prize for Excellence in Agriculture is requesting nominations for the 2012 awards. The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to agriculture and the alleviation of world hunger.

The U of M’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences administers the awards. Recipients are chosen in three categories: knowledge (teaching, research and outreach), production agriculture, and agribusiness. Each laureate receives a $50,000 award as well as a sculpture and lapel pin designed specifically for the Siehl Prize by Minnesota artist Thomas Rose.

The Siehl Prize was created in the early 1990s by a generous gift from New Ulm-area livestock breeder and businessman Eldon Siehl, a dedicated philanthropist who had a lifelong interest in agricultural systems. Siehl was concerned that people were losing touch with their agrarian roots and wanted his gift to ensure that achievements in agriculture would be recognized and celebrated.

Nominee(s) must reside or have resided in Minnesota for at least five years or hold a degree from the U of M. Individuals and teams of people are eligible. Self-nominations and nominations by relatives are not permitted.

Learn more about the Siehl Prize and review nomination instructions online. The deadline for nominations is January 15, 2012 with award winners expected to be announced during National Ag Week, in late March 2012.
