Notes from the Department Head

James G. Linn, Professor and Interim Head

This past week, I attended the annual meeting of Animal Science Department Heads and Chairs. A topic of discussion and major concern of Heads and Chairs was the small number of graduate students in animal science departments and the challenges of getting a qualified pool of applications for positions in animal science departments. Fewer graduate students in the Animal Sciences is not unique to Minnesota, but it is prevalent across universities in the U.S. The Food and Agricultural Education System released a survey of 37 Colleges of Agriculture showing enrollment in Animal Science graduate programs has declined over the last three years. Master’s student numbers have decreased from 781 to 708 from 2004 to 2006 and doctorial student numbers have decreased even more, going from 522 to 438. Also of interest was that females represented a larger percentage of student numbers in master’s programs at 59% while male students were slightly higher at 55% of the student numbers in PhD programs. U.S. citizens accounted for 89% of the master’s students, but at the PhD level, only 62% were U.S. citizens.

The current low and continual diminishing number of graduate students in the Animal Sciences is not something affecting only higher education institutions, but all of animal agriculture and allied industries. The concern is not only for the extended future, but for the present as companies, organizations and institutions seek to hire new advanced degree employees.

There undoubtedly are a number of reasons why we are at a critically low number of people in graduate school. However, two of the most prominent reasons are: 1) good job opportunities for baccalaureate students in Animal Sciences, and 2) the declining funding and increasing cost of graduate education. To this latter reason, we are exploring new approaches for companies and organizations to partner with us in educating future animal scientists and leaders in animal agriculture. Opportunities are available for companies to help finance graduate education for current and future employees. Companies and organizations can benefit greatly in advancing the knowledge and skills of current employees and also identify future employees through cooperative education programs. We need future scientists, employees and leaders in both the basic and applied animal sciences. I invite you to contact me or others in our department to explore opportunities to partner in graduate programs and train the next generation of animal scientists.

B&B Does Exceptionally Well at Spring Barrow Show

The Block and Bridle Club exhibited swine from the Swine Research and Teaching Facility at the 2008 Spring Barrow Show held January 31 and February 1 in Albert Lea, MN (photos below). Members of the club were able to partake in the fitting and exhibiting of the swine, some of whom have never worked with swine before.

Of the 9 animals exhibited, the club took the honors of: Reserve Champion Truckload, Reserve Champion Barrow, and Reserve Champion Market Gilt.

In the Truckload competition, the University showed the lightest set of hogs but was granted the honor of Reserve Champion for their uniformity.

The Reserve Champion Barrow was deemed exceptional and came from “the class of the day” according to Judge John Huinker.

U of M Students Take the Challenge

Six U of M students and coach Marcia Endres traveled to Indiana in January to participate in the 4th Midwest Dairy Challenge. Students who took the Challenge were Melisa Bauer, Micki Czech, Amber Hazel, Brenda Nelson, Katie Olson, and Evan Van Beusekom.

The Midwest Dairy Challenge, the largest regional contest in the nation, was hosted by Purdue University in Merrillville, IN. The event, held January 31 to February 2, featured 102 participants from 13 different schools: Iowa State, Kansas State, Lakeshore Tech College, Michigan State, NDSU, Ohio State, Purdue, SDSU, SW Wisconsin Tech College, University of Illinois, University of Minnesota, UW-Madison, UW-River Falls.

On Thursday evening, students had the opportunity to visit Fair Oaks Dairy Adventure in Northern Indiana. An experience that was enjoyed by all.

Throughout the contest, working in four- or five-person, mixed university teams, students assessed all aspects of a commercial dairy farm and presented recommendations for improvement to a panel of judges. Students evaluated one of three dairies located in the region. Because of a snow storm, students could not physically visit the dairies and had to work with a virtual tour of each dairy, which made the contest even more challenging. Armed with detailed production and financial records from the farms, the participants developed a presentation about what they concluded and made suggestions for improvement.

On Saturday, teams were given 20 minutes to present their suggestions. A question and answer session followed, along with a critique of their presentation by a panel of judges.

Award levels are platinum, gold and silver. Three of our students (Micki Czech, Brenda Nelson and Evan Van Beusekom) were members of teams that received a platinum award.

Congratulations to all students for a job well done!

Students Honored at 24th Annual Recognition Banquet of the Gopher Dairy Club

More than 200 people attended the 24th Annual Recognition Banquet of the Gopher Dairy Club on Sunday, February 10, in the North Star Ballroom of the St. Paul Student Center. Welcoming comments were provided by Animal Science Department Head Jim Linn, Associate Dean Jay Bell, and by Ann Miron, a CFANS student serving as Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

Featured speaker was Paul Trapp, Jr., a Gopher Dairy Club alumnus, who is a Regional Sire Analyst for ABS Global in DeForest, WI. The club's Distinguished Service Award was presented to Vernon and Olive Hupf, who are long-time boosters of the Gopher Dairy Club. Five Hupf children studied on the U of M St. Paul campus, as well as six grandchildren.

Scholarship recipients, dairy cattle judging team members, and dairy challenge team members were recognized. The U of M's two nominees for the National Dairy Shrine Student Recognition Competition were announced — Lana Olson and Lisa Thompson. The R.W. Touchberry Outstanding Junior in Animal Science Award, which includes a $1,000 scholarship, was presented to Amanda Eberle.

New student scholarships of $1,500 were presented by the Gopher Dairy Club to 11 freshmen — Matt Borst, Scott Helgeson, Jessie Ingvalson, Caitlin Kasper, Elinor Optiz, Brenda Reiter, Zach Sawall, Brandon Thesing, Abby Udermann, Pamela VonRuden, and Robert Westman. The highest ranking applicant for the new student scholarships is awarded the Douglas Siem Memorial Award of $2,000, which was presented to Megan Herberg. The Outstanding Rookie award was presented to Jessica Achen, and the Outstanding Senior was a tie and presented to both Alise Jennissen and Lana Olson.

To finish the program was a slide show that reviewed the 11-day trip to California taken by 23 senior members of the Gopher Dairy Club. Profit from the Gopher Dairy Bar on the north wall of the Cattle Barn at the Minnesota State Fair provides the funds for the new student scholarship program, the fully-funded senior trip to California, the publication of the club's annual yearbook The Topline, and the travel funds to regional and national meetings of the student affiliate division of the American Dairy Science Association.

Biosafety Level 3 Necropsy Lab Completed

The U of M Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory completed its biosafety level 3 necropsy lab in January. Biosafety level 3 is a biosafety level considered appropriate for agents that may be transmitted by the respiratory route, which can cause serious infection.

The necropsy lab is designed for examinations of dead animals weighing up to 100 pounds. A feature of the lab is a giant autoclave that uses steam to sterilize the carcasses once they have been examined. The new lab will allow diagnoses of highly transmissible diseases like high pathogenic avian influenza, and help the state immediately respond to outbreaks of diseases that could potentially spread from animals to people.

For more information, contact the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab at 612-625-8787 or 800-605-8787.

Accounting Updates

U Stores Changing to PeopleSoft - What This Means For You
Some of you may have noticed mention of 'PS' on the U Stores website. For those of you who may have seen it and don't know what it is... PS stands for PeopleSoft, which is another name for the new Enterprise Financial System (EFS) going into effect on July 1, 2008. U Stores will also be using the new system.

How will this affect Animal Science? All ordering, both through U Stores and outside vendors, will be handled by the Division Finance Team – at least for the first 6 months. Otherwise, non-financial staff would have to take 2+ days of training on the new system. After the first 6 months, Training Services will provide abbreviated training sessions for non-financial staff and at that point the situation will be revisited.

If you have any questions or concerns about the new financial system, please contact Jackie Lee at 624-3440.

New Web Links - For Your Convenience
There are now two new links on the Animal Science home page under "For Current Employees". Employee Expense Worksheet (for reporting expenses) and Statement in Lieu of Receipt (to document a reimbursable transaction if receipt is lost or unattainable). We hope you find these new links useful.
