Lecturer (9753) - Animal Science

The Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota invites qualified applicants to apply for a 9-month, non-tenure lecturer position beginning Fall semester of 2012.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach innovative and effective courses for the Animal Science undergraduate program with particular emphasis on the disciplines of animal and human physiology and biotechnology.  This position is a 9-month annually renewable appointment. Opportunities exist to engage in research during the summer months.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop, instruct and/or co-instruct undergraduate courses in the Animal Science major curriculum with technology-based delivery methods.

Provide service to the teaching mission of the department. Examples of service opportunities include:

  • participation in department and college curriculum development
  • development of on-line courses
  • providing technology expertise to departmental teaching faculty
  • serving as an academic advisor to Animal Science majors
  • assisting college academic advisor in freshman advising, enrollment and orientation

Pursue continuing professional development

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:      

  • PhD Degree in Animal Science or a related field is required at the time the appointment begins.
  • Expertise in animal physiology and biotechnology.
  • Excellent communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Experience teaching at the university level
  • Experience using technology in teaching
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Knowledge of university level undergraduate academic programs
  • Experience advising college students

SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Reserach Fellow - Dairy Cattle Production

Position description: This research fellow will work under the direction of the principal investigator on the collection and summarization of data for a dairy calf research project. This is a temporary, 2-year position.

Required: MS in Animal Science or related field; knowledge of dairy cattle production; planning and organizational skills; experience with agricultural animals (calves); experience collecting blood samples(calves); experience with statistical analysis.

Preferred: Proficiency with computer software for data analysis and record management; written and verbal communication skills.

  • 65% - Conduct on-farm observational data collection on 30 dairy calf farms
     
  • 25% - Participate in the implementation and development of protocols for data collection in grant funded study with dairy calves
     
  • 5% - Conduct statistical analyses of the data
     
  • 5% - Contribute to the development of reports, papers and publications

Graduate Student, M.S. in Alternative Swine Production Systems

Description
The Graduate Program in Animal Sciences at the University of Minnesota is seeking a research assistant who is interested in graduate studies in Alternative Swine Production Systems. This position is for a highly motivated and qualified student interested in pursuing a master’s degree. The student will be located on the St. Paul Campus for course work, but research will be conducted at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) http://wcroc.cfans.umn.edu at Morris, Minnesota.  The student will work closely with other students, scientists, and their advising faculty both on the St. Paul Campus and at the WCROC.  The student is expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00.  Two-year funding is currently available beginning Spring Semester 2012.  Research assistantships include a stipend, a full tuition waiver, and medical and dental benefits.

Research will focus on improving performance and welfare of swine in alternative housing systems by applying ethological knowledge.  Several research projects currently undergoing include: reducing aggression among group-housed gestating sows, association of maternal fear with pre-weaning mortality of piglets in group-farrowing systems, and effects of previous housing on behavioral development of pigs.

Post-Doctoral Associate or Research Associate - Swine Nutrition

Department of Animal Science, University of Minnesota, St. Paul

POSITION: Full-time, 12-month contingent position.

DESCRIPTION: A post-doctoral or research associate position is available immediately to assist our swine nutrition program studies. The primary responsibilities will be in the area of swine nutrition research. Specific duties will include writing grant proposals, experimental protocols, and research papers for publication; conducting literature reviews; preparing animal care and use applications; statistical analysis of research data; performing various laboratory procedures; collecting data, samples, and caring for research animals; and assisting swine nutrition graduate students with their research projects.

QUALIFICATIONS: An advanced degree (Ph.D.) in a related field within the past 3 years is essential. A strong background in swine nutrition and demonstrated productivity in the laboratory is required. Good communication and interpersonal skills are highly desirable. Prior experience in swine nutrition research is preferred.

SALARY: Salaries are highly competitive, negotiable and commensurate with qualifications. Fringe benefits offered.

Post-Doctoral Research Associate - Quantitative Genetics

A postdoctoral research associate position annually renewable for 30 months (2.5 years) is available immediately for research in Quantitative Genetics. The primary duty is to develop analytical computing methods for genome-wide SNP analysis in areas of association, selection signature, SNP imputing, LD and linkage analyses. This position is expected to lead or participate in the development of parallel computing tools based on our currently available computer programs. Salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Fringe benefits are offered.

This is a new position. The previously advertised bioinformatics position has been filled. Possibility of extending this position to 3 years exists. A Ph.D. in quantitative genetics with experience in analyzing genome-wide SNP data and programming skills would be most ideal. Student well prepared in statistics and computing wishing to take this challenge while working on a Ph.D. degree could be considered.
