Position: Assistant/Associate Professor (9-month appointment; 60% research and 40% extension; tenure track) in Beef Cow-Calf Management. Tenure review and promotion will be in the Department of Animal Science.

Location: The position is located at the North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, (map) approximately 180 mi N of the St. Paul Campus.  The NCROC is one of several branches of the University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station system, and was established in 1896 to serve the needs of the citizens of northeast and north central Minnesota. NCROC now encompasses nearly 900 acres, a 250-Angus cow herd, and the Reproductive Biotechnology Center. Recently, the NCROC received legislative support to become a premier training and demonstration center for managing a cow herd within restrictions appropriate for a modified accredited TB status herd.

Description:

  • To develop a comprehensive and excellent integrated research and extension education program in beef cow-calf management that contributes to the mission of the Department of Animal Science, University of Minnesota Extension and CFANS by providing information and service to Minnesota's beef cow-calf industry.
  • To oversee NCROC beef programs and to coordinate beef research between NCROC and other University of Minnesota (UM) locations.
  • To help lead and serve as an active member of the UM Beef Team, a group of Extension Animal Scientists and Extension Educators who address industry issues through educational programs and research initiatives.

Responsibilities:

Research -

The successful candidate will conduct translational research relative to cow/calf production system management. Area(s) of focus may include cow/calf nutrition and management, stored and grazed forage systems, reproductive management and/or genetics. Close collaboration is required with other CFANS faculty, the College of Veterinary Medicine and state and federal agencies. The successful candidate will demonstrate research productivity through successful extra- and intra-mural funding and publication in relevant refereed journals. The successful candidate will also be expected to involve graduate students in research and develop and implement a nationally and internationally recognized research program in their area or discipline focusing on beef cow-calf management.

Extension -

The successful candidate will be a key leader within the Beef Team providing state-wide leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of innovative extension education programs on beef cow-calf management.  The individual will collaborate with scientists from the UM and other states, representatives of the beef cow-calf industry, and others to identify appropriate education and research strategies that address problems and issues important to the livestock industry. Extension programming responsibilities should include, but are not limited to, written and web-based information, producer and industry programs and individual consultation.

Qualifications:

Required -

  • Ph.D., or equivalent, in animal science or a closely related field.
  • Strong oral and written English communication skills.
  • Demonstrated desire and ability to propose and conduct independent and team-based research and to publish results in scientific journals.
  • Experience in extending educational programming to producer clientele and allied industry.
  • Experience and success in scientific publication and experience in grantsmanship.

Preferred -

  • Completed courses in livestock production, animal health and nutrition, reproductive physiology, beef cow-calf management, animal breeding and genetics, statistics, forage production and management, agronomy, pasture and range management, and/or plant growth and nutrition.
  • Demonstrated disciplinary and interdisciplinary research experience
  • Evidence of success in obtaining extramural grant funding
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary educational  programs and research teams
  • Evidence of skills in developing and utilizing distance learning, web-based activities
  • Relevant knowledge of beef cow-calf management

Salary and benefits: Position will be filled at a tenure-track rank of assistant or associate professor with a nine-month, 100% appointment within the Department of Animal Science. Salary will be supplemented with two months of summer salary for the first two years of the appointment to help establish a research program. Salary is competitive and commensurate with professional experience and qualifications. Post-Doctoral Associate or
Research Associate

POSITION: Full-time, 12-month contingent position.
 
DESCRIPTION: A post-doctoral (Ph.D. required) or research (M.S. required) associate position is available immediately to assist our swine nutrition program studies. The primary responsibilities will be in the area of swine nutrition research.  Specific duties will include writing grant proposals, experimental protocols, and research papers for publication; conducting literature reviews; preparing animal care and use applications; statistical analysis of research data; performing various laboratory procedures; collecting data, samples, and caring for research animals; and assisting swine nutrition graduate students with their research projects.

QUALIFICATIONS: An advanced degree (Ph.D. or M.S.) in a related field within the past 3 years is essential. A strong background in swine nutrition and demonstrated productivity in the laboratory is required. Good communication and interpersonal skills are highly desirable. Prior experience in swine nutrition research is preferred.
