Current Research

Each of our faculty members has a Ph.D. degree in a specialized area of animal science and is involved in research. Faculty members are constantly developing and examining new ideas and methods to provide students and agricultural producers with current scientific information.

Research grants and gifts comprise about 30% of our departmental funds. Two thirds of our graduate students are supported by departmental research funds, and one third by federal and business grants.

A broad spectrum of research, ranging from fundamental laboratory studies to farm-oriented applied projects, is conducted.

Our current research areas include molecular, cellular, developmental, and growth biology, genetics (quantitative, molecular and functional), physiology and cell signaling, reproduction, nutrition (ruminant and non-ruminant), and production systems. Specialized laboratories provide modern equipment for basic science research.

Animal facilities on campus are designed for practical studies in beef and dairy cattle, poultry, and swine production. Additional large herds and flocks are located at the Research and Outreach Centers in Crookston, Grand Rapids, Morris, Rosemount, and Waseca, Minnesota.
