Admission Requirements

To apply, please submit the following:

To the program:

  • GRE Scores

To the Graduate School:

  • Online application for admission (through Apply Yourself) with fee ($75 US citizens & permanent resident applicants, $95 international applicants)
  • Three letters of reference
  • Statement of purpose focusing on career objectives, teaching/research experience, and publications (if any)
  • Transcripts (unofficial for initial review)
  • For international applicants whose first language is not English - English Language Proficiency Examination (TOEFL, MELABM, IELTS)

GRE Scores in the 60th percentile or above are preferred. The Verbal score is somewhat less important than the Quantitative score.

Letters of reference should be submitted online by the applicant’s recommenders using the Apply Yourself system. Recommenders should write a thoughtful and candid evaluation of the applicant’s qualifications and complete all accompanying forms.

Unofficial transcripts or academic records should be uploaded directly to the online application. International students should also upload an English translation if the transcript is not in English. Please do not mail in paper copies of your transcripts, there is no need for official transcripts or academic records for initial review.

If you are admitted, the University will then request official copies of this material.

For non-native speakers of English, TOEFL scores of 213 or better on the computer-based test (or 550 on the paper-based test) are required by the Graduate School. Scores on the new Internet-based TOEFL must total at least 79, with section scores of at least 21 in Writing and 19 in Reading. Read more information about the TOEFL and other tests that applicants may take to meet the Graduate School’s language requirement.
