Research Interests

The phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of cellular proteins is a critical component in the regulation of all biological processes. The signaling molecules known as protein tyrosine kinases and phosphatases are essential mediators of this type of regulation. They are responsible for maintaining a steady-state level of specific phosphotyrosine proteins which will influence the functional state of the cell. Mutations or dysfunction in these molecules is associated with many animal and human diseases including deadly bacterial infections, diabetes, and cancer. My laboratory studies the importance of the tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) in cell proliferation and differentiation. We are interested in how certain PTPs regulate cell growth and differentiation during the development and remodeling of bone. In addition, we are exploring whether these molecules could serve as drug targets for skeletal disorders, such as osteoporosis, in animals and humans.
