Education

Ph.D., Iowa State University

Research Interests

Prior to graduate school, Dr. Hansen was employed in industry as a public relations specialist with a dairy cattle breeding organization. Therefore, much of his research has been closely tied to the dairy cattle breeding industry, and many of his former students are employed by the dairy cattle breeding organizations in the USA. Monitoring of genetic relationships and inbreeding of Holsteins has been an on-going area of interest and research. Furthermore, Dr. Hansen is the curator of a 1964 control line of Holstein cows at the University of Minnesota, which is currently housed at the research and outreach center at Morris, MN, and is composed of 30 lactating cows with an equivalent number of heifers. Data collection continues from the well-known long-term (since 1966) selection project for large versus small Holsteins at the research and outreach center at Crookston, MN. However, the majority of Dr. Hansen's research at this time focuses on the comparison of pure Holsteins versus crossbreds. The documented decline of health, fertility, and survival of pure Holsteins has resulted in tremendous global interest in crossbreeding of dairy cattle.

Dr. Hansen teaches undergraduate courses in biometrics and dairy cattle breeding, and a graduate course in linear model methods.
