Responsibilities: The Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University (MSU) is seeking a dynamic individual who is expected to establish and maintain a strong beef integrated research and extension program. Programmatic emphasis may be in environmental management, nutrition, genetics, reproduction, health, behavior and welfare, product quality, integrated beef systems or complement other strengths in the Department. The individual will be expected to contribute to the MSU Beef Team, which utilizes multidisciplinary approaches for teaching, research, and extension. Success will depend on developing an extramurally funded research and extension program that provides leadership for Michigan’s beef industry. The opportunity exists to contribute to leadership and direction of MSU’s four beef research and teaching cattle units.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Animal Science or related discipline. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated accomplishments in beef research and extension. Additionally, experience in grant writing, ability to collaborate, a record of peer reviewed publications and experience in beef cattle production are preferred.

Assistant Professor - Range Management Cow/Calf Specialist

Description: 12-month, tenure-leading position with a 40% research and 60% extension responsibilities. The position is located at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center (PHREC) at Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The successful candidate will provide leadership for Range Management research/extension programs in western Nebraska. Will conduct applied research on the sustainable use and resource management of semi-arid rangelands and the ecological implication of grazing and sustainable livestock production on rangelands. Strong collaboration with a rangeland research team, PHREC specialists and educators, cattle industry personnel, affiliated organizations, federal agencies and advisory groups will identify important research topics and opportunities. Additional research areas may include integrated range management systems, grazing management, applied animal behavior, and use of geospatial and climate data to monitor and manage rangelands. Ph.D. in range science, animal science, or related field and a demonstrated ability to publish original research in peer-reviewed journals. Research experience and expertise with rangeland ecology, grazing management, range livestock production, and integrated range management systems. Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team, and good verbal and written communication skills are also requirements. Relevant experience in grant writing capability is desired for this position.

Assistant professor – Beef Cattle Metabolic Physiologist

Overview: The Department of Animal Sciences and the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center (EOARC) at Oregon State University (OSU) seeks outstanding individuals who are interested in becoming part of a Range Beef Cattle Center of Excellence. If selected, you will provide leadership, along with Eastern Oregon Experiment Station faculty, to the statewide beef cattle Extension effort. You will serve as a statewide Beef Cattle Extension Specialist and be a resource person for county extension agents, cattle producers and agribusinesses, produce popular press and extension publications, and effectively communicate research based information. You will be expected to develop programs that address the needs of Oregon’s diverse clientele, which include but are not limited to, Native American beef producers, niche market beef producers, cow/calf producers, stocker operations, feedlots, and producers with public land grazing allotments. In addition, you will have the opportunity to provide leadership for Oregon’s Beef Quality Assurance Program. Your research will be directed toward beef production in Oregon and the Intermountain West and in collaboration with faculty at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center, Department of Animal Sciences, state wide Extension faculty and other university departments and experiment stations as appropriate. The EOARC is jointly managed and funded by the Agricultural Experiment Station of OSU and USDA-ARS. Some of the current topics being studied include ruminant nutrition, grazing behavior, rangeland restoration, rangeland ecology, livestock-wildlife-grazing interactions, and invasive species. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment; 0.25 FTE will be from recurring funds to raise the appointment percentage to 1.0 FTE. Tenure track will be offered at 0.75 FTE. The position is located at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center in Burns. Tenure is administered through the Department of Animal Sciences.

Position: Full time, 12-month academic professional position. The appointment will be for one year, with potential for continuation beyond 1 year, depending on the availability of funding and performance. Function statement: Participates in a research team studying biofuels production, anaerobic digestion processes, and conversion of biowastes into Biobutanol; research emphasis is on metabolomics and processes regulating conversion of agricultural byproducts into biobutanol; prepares manuscripts for publication, assist with the preparation of grant proposals, and participates in the supervision of graduate students; position located at Wooster, Ohio.
Minimum education requirement: PhD in molecular biology, Animal Sciences, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or any related field.
Experience: Experience in metabolic engineering of bacteria or solventogenic clostridia desired.
Supervise: 2 graduate students.
Duties description: 90% - plans and conducts experiments; exploit clostridia genome information, mutagenesis methods or other suitable means to develop clostridia mutants with higher butanol tolerance, productivity, and specificity; assist in extramural grant proposal preparation and prepares manuscripts for publication. 10% - assists with the supervision of graduate students and work closely with one research associate; assists with maintenance of good laboratory practice by all laboratory members; prepares and presents research findings at scientific meetings.

Description: The NDSU Dairy Teaching and Research Unit maintains approximately 200 animals for teaching, research and extension programs. John Bekkers Professor of Poultry Processing

The individual selected for this position will be expected to develop a contemporary research program in poultry meat science that will be supported in part by extramural funding. Potential research foci could include, but are not limited to, processing methods affecting poultry meat quality, food safety, and muscle biology. Assistant Professor - Poultry Nutrition

Position: The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month, full-time faculty position (Assistant Professor) in Poultry Nutrition. The research program will focus on quantifying/modeling nutritional needs of poultry, identifying and characterizing novel nutrient sources for poultry or developing nutritional regimens to enhance the nutritional composition of eggs and maintaining the integrity of the environment.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to: a) develop a research program of national stature serving the Iowa poultry industry, particularly related to layers, by using innovative and contemporary approaches; b) secure extramural funding; c) teach undergraduate and graduate courses in nutrition and poultry management; d) advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and e) participate in multidisciplinary programs to address priority areas of the Iowa poultry industry. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team with the new Egg Industry Center. Extension Livestock Environment Specialist - Assistant Professor

Position: This is a twelve month, tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at Montana State University – Bozeman. The appointment will be 72% Extension education, 18% research, and 10% outreach/service supported by MSU Extension and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station. The incumbent will develop Extension education, a research program, and activities that address minimizing environmental impacts of livestock management systems. This position will require close working relationships within the Department, and with other departments on the MSU campus, government agencies, commodity associations, and other Land Grant Universities.

Beef cattle are the primary livestock species, but Montana also has sheep, dairy and swine production systems.
Duties: The successful candidate will provide leadership and conduct statewide programming, research and outreach focused on livestock management systems that address animal waste management and other environmental impacts associated with livestock production. Programming would typically include: 1) training and technical support sessions for animal feeding operations (AFO, CAFO) and nutrient management planners, and 2) technical support in nutrient management planning, environmental issues related to livestock systems, and regulatory updates. The Extension education program will support and address needs of livestock producers, county agricultural agents, various commodity groups associated with livestock enterprises, and other stakeholders. The research program will address current and emerging environmental issues associated with livestock management systems. The Extension education and research programs will require interacting with other MSU faculty, agricultural groups, individual stakeholders, and agencies in Montana. The successful candidate will disseminate information via publications, bulletins, fact sheets, newsletters, curriculums, and innovative media. The candidate will be expected to: 1) anticipate and respond to emerging animal waste issues, 2) conduct research, and 3) provide outreach related to demonstration projects on new animal waste management technologies and practices.
Major duties and responsibilities will include: 1) develop, promote and provide leadership for team-oriented educational programs with other Extension and research personnel, 2) facilitate oral, written and electronic communication to address educational needs on livestock management and their production environments to minimize environmental (water, air, soil) impacts, 3) develop a research program that enhances Extension education and outreach responsibilities, 4) secure extramural funds from state, regional and national sources, and the agricultural industry, and participate in relevant service activities.
Required qualifications: Position requires an earned Ph.D. degree in Animal Science, Environmental Sciences, Nutrient Management, Natural Resources, Range Science or a related discipline, with training in animal science, and livestock management systems, including environmental impacts. Demonstrated ability or potential to develop quality Extension education and research programs in environmental impacts of livestock management systems. Demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, and interpersonal relations.
Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of production practices associated with livestock management and associated environmental issues. Demonstrated ability or potential to organize, implement and evaluate innovative Extension programs. Demonstrated ability to plan, design, implement and publish research. Knowledge of governmental environmental quality policies and statutes. Knowledge and use of innovative technologies for educational programming and management. Potential to secure extramural funding.

Position: Assistant Professor in Poultry Microbiology. This tenure track position will have teaching and research responsibilities. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in poultry science, animal science, microbiology, food science or related field is required and post-doctoral experience is preferred. Responsibilities: Selected candidate is expected to establish and maintain an independent, extramurally funded, basic research program in molecular nutrition with emphasis across animal species and contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching programs. Research foci is expected to be investigation of key regulatory pathways that govern intake, digestion, absorption, and (or) partitioning of nutrients across animal species using state of the art molecular and cellular approaches. Collaboration with the established core of nutritionists in the Department of Animal Science is expected.
