Nutritionist
Nutrition and Labeling Team
Division of Animal Feeds, Office of Surveillance and Compliance
Center for Veterinary Medicine
Duties and responsibilities: The scientist will be a member of the Nutrition and Labeling Team (HFV-228) within the Division of Animal Feeds, Office of Surveillance and Compliance (OSC) in FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. Working under the supervision of the Team Leader, the incumbent will be responsible for applying valid scientific principles, appropriate nutritional practice, microbial expertise, and a sound understanding of FDA’s laws, regulations, guidance, and polices relating to animal feed, to the specific duties identified in the paragraphs below. The incumbent will serve within OSC’s Division of Animal Feeds as a scientific reviewer of data and information concerning the acceptability of new substances intended for use in animal feed. A primary focus will be the evaluation of novel substances obtained from a variety of sources, which may include items like plant extracts and fermentation products. Some of these substances will also be obtained using emerging technologies and derived from unusual sources, such as bioengineered microorganisms and plants. The evaluation of the safety and appropriateness of these novel substances will be a primary concern. The incumbent will be responsible for the review and evaluation of the utility and safety of new food additives, investigational food additives, proposed ingredients, and substances that may be generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for an intended use in animal feed. This review and evaluation may include determining whether the appropriate experimental designs were employed for safety and/or utility studies used in the collection of research data on the substances; ensuring the appropriate statistical analyses were conducted on the data; and identifying additional scientific evidence that must be provided by a sponsor to demonstrate substance safety and/or utility. The reviews are complex because of the large quantity of data points that need to be evaluated and the potential for there to be across species extrapolation of these data. The incumbent will also be responsible for identifying and commenting on deficiencies in submissions related to the utility and safety of new food additives, investigational food additives, proposed ingredients, and GRAS substances. The incumbent will also recommend corrective measures and additional data needs where necessary. Based on the incumbent’s expertise, they may recommend to the Team Leader the implementation of new or revisions of existing policies brought about by new information, programs, or techniques related to the use of new substances in animal feed. The incumbent may also evaluate whether product labeling is adequate to ensure the safety and utility of a substance in feed. Label reviews may include ensuring the presence of appropriate warning/caution statements and adequate directions for use. The incumbent may also review the labeling of marketed products for compliance with agency and state recommendations and requirements. The incumbent will also provide support for the Division’s and Office’s activities concerning animal feed. Such activities might include development of guidance documents, other public information documents, maintenance of internet pages or responses to public inquiries related to current and revised regulations and policies. The incumbent will also serve as a general resource for information about animal nutrition, particularly in their area of expertise.

Ph.D. Training Opportunity in Reproductive Endocrinology
Department of Biological Sciences
Idaho State University
Position: Opportunity to study for the Ph.D. with an emphasis in Reproductive Endocrinology. This position will be available at the start of the fall semester of 2009. Our research is focused on the hormonal preparation of the uterus for blastocyst implantation. Presently, we are investigating the effects of catecholestrogens (CE’s) produced by the uterus from estradiol-17 beta (E2), on uterine glycogen metabolism. Our recent findings with mink, demonstrated that the CE’s, 4-hydroxyestradiol (4-OHE2) and 2-hydroxyestradiol (2-OHE2) were equal to E2 in stimulating uterine GLY accumulation. Both E2 and CE’s appear to act on the uterus to reduce expression of Glycogen Phosphorylase (GP) mRNA and promote phosphorylation and therefore inactivation of Glycogen Synthetase Kinase-3β (GSK-3β). Collectively, these actions will enhance GLY synthesis and reduce its catabolism. We hypothesize that uterine GLY synthesis and catabolism increase during the window of implantation in mink, diverting glucose to the uterus, supporting blastocyst activation and implantation. The actions of the CE’s may have the added effect of increasing litter sizes. More information can be found at http://www.isu.edu/~rosewill/2008_poster.shtml#.
Salary: This position includes an annual stipend of approximately $19,642.00 / year, plus graduate tuition and fees of $6815.00 (Pending final approval from NIH-INBRE).
