What areas of opportunity exist in this field?

As a student in Animal science, you will select an emphasis area: Science/Biotechnology/Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Industry, or Production.

Within your emphasis, you can also specialize in a specific animal area—beef, companion animals, dairy, equine, poultry, sheep, or swine. Each offers a range of career opportunities.

Science/Biotechnology/Pre-Veterinary Medicine

  • prepare for veterinary school so that you an provide veterinary care and treatment for companion animals, equine, and food production animals
  • prepare for graduate school in a science-related field
  • develop improved methods for feeding, housing, and breeding livestock and companion animals
  • conduct biotechnology research to create or modify products that improve the quality of life for humans, animals, and plants

Industry

  • select and purchase new merchandise for a feed, genetics, or animal health company's product line
  • market small and large animal pharmaceutical, feed, and management products to businesses and producers

Production

  • manage an equine, livestock, or poultry production facility
  • offer consulting advice to producers about breeding, feeding, and management
  • own or manage a companion animal kennel
  • inspect food and product labeling to ensure safety

What skills will I develop through this major?

You'll learn about the latest advances in animal health, production management, and marketing. You will study areas—such as commodity production, sales and services, basic science and technology, and business and marketing—to gain the skills necessary to turn a love of animals into a rewarding career. Here are a few specific skills you'll develop:

  • knowledge and understanding of the physical and biological sciences
  • hands-on experience with a variety of animal species
  • ability to supervise and manage diverse employees
  • marketing skills
  • ability to manage an animal production facility
  • problem-solving skills
  • ability to identify and address needs of individual customers

What if my career goals change?

Our Animal Science program is a broad degree that prepares you to excel in many careers not typically considered animal or agriculturally related. So if your goals change or you decide not to go on to veterinary school, there are many options you can pursue to have a fulfilling professional career.
