200-cow freestall barn, Albertville, MNMinnesota Dairy Days-2002

Dairy modernization was the focus of the 2002 Minnesota Dairy Days held across the state in January. Practical ideas were presented on how producers can make stepwise changes in their operations to achieve success. Facilities, milking centers and economics of modernization were covered including examples of operations that have done it. Management topics that relate to modernization of the dairy farm were also part of the program, including key aspects of transition cow management, how to optimize cow culling, how to utilize lighting as a tool to increase milk production, how to effectively use a TMR mixer, the importance of ration particle size, how to obtain state business planning grants, among others. Management topics varied from location to location. This event was also an opportunity to learn about some of the dairy research projects conducted at the University of Minnesota.

Bob Lefebvre, Executive Director of Minnesota Milk Producers Association says “MMPA was pleased to be a part of the valuable education sessions. The information that the University of Minnesota Extension Service provided was not only timely, but essential to the future success of our dairy producers." Bob believes that the proceedings would be very helpful to producers in their modernization planning.
